Of a total of 1500 known volcanoes, there are 20 mildly active volcanoes in the western continental United States. Mauna Loa and Kiluaea are active on the
island of Hawaii. Alaska alone has over 130 potentially active volcanoes and volcanic fields. Over 50 have been active in the last 250 years. Cook Inlet

 volcanoes (Spurr, Redoubt, Iliamna, and Augustine) can have severe impacts, as these volcanoes are near to Anchorage, Alaska's largest population center.

Besides very seismically active areas in California, Alaska, Hawaii and Oregon there are hurricane threats to all three coasts most years.
